Newsletters and State Flags
New York State is a troubled Empire. A belief is that the political infighting and lack of congruency in state policies have brought the empire to its knees. There is little if any faith in the political process beyond the old-timers and some of the newer followers who remain die-hard to antiquated political and economic traditions.
In the news here the local state story is about the lack of funding to preserve a great portion of this states history in the way of the state’s flags. A collection of state flags going back hundreds of years are now in jeopardy because the state does not have to give the one-hundred thousand dollars ( $100,000 ) to keep them intact for future generations.
In the same weeks local news a reporter visiting the capital to ask why many of the senate and representatives of this state still use mass mailings in the tune of hundreds of thousands of tax dollars per year each. These are the very same bulk-mail news leaflets that show the mailings creator with a picture or perhaps a picture of the county seat and all the information about how wonderfully your particular representative is performing on your behalf.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
You (collectively) the members of the state government of New York, the very state senators and representatives that are supposed to be looking out for our best interests spending millions of dollars that could be used in a more economically productive fashion. If I want to find out how you’re screwing up I can check out the state’s website. If I want information on how the state’s budget is fairing I can check it out through the media or internet. In the meantime, stop mass mailing me and everyone else, it only becomes fuel for the landfills and destroys more of the forest resources.
Spend some of that money on our state’s heritage and preserve our flags! Use the rest to help improve your counties constituents.

Canadian Quarters
I have not been on the New York State Thruway in some time. Reports of toll increases were in the news several months ago where the increases were justified by a need for the as usual repairs and rising prices of said maintenance. There is a policy that the Thruway Toll Collectors will not accept Canadian Coin. They simply will not! Due to the interstate the quanity of cars and trucks from our neighbor to the north can cause a pretty big influx of Canadian coins throughout the state from north to south, east to west.
How curious I found when I paid my $4.35 toll that in my change was a Canadian quarter. So, some toll collector who screwed up decided to pay me in change that they are unwilling to look at as equitable legal tender! I guess someone in the toll authority of this state is in constant monitoring of the Canadian-U.S. Dollar exchange rate.
Now I somehow have to try to pass it off on someone else?
It’s always the little things, the butterfly effects!

For too long I've messed with the wiring in my head. Now it shorts out more oft than not. But at my age I just sit and enjoy the sparks. RJM '07
