The Noble Lie
February 3, 2009

We all know what a lie is or at least I would hope we do. I know I do. Yet, there is a lie perpetuated regularly on the public in many fashions and forms and that is called a "Noble Lie." According with a list of lies a noble lie is this,
"In politics a noble lie is a myth or untruth, often, but not invariably, of a religious nature, knowingly told by an elite to maintain social harmony, particularly the social position of that elite. The noble lie is a concept originated by Plato as described in The Republic. However, the concept has far greater scope and has been used by many commentators to talk about much more modern issues in politics. A noble lie, although it may benefit all parties, is different from a white lie since a white lie does not cause discord if uncovered whereas noble lies are usually of a nature such that they would do so."
A lie such as this is deceiving to the people and used more often than not in our country and in our world. Used by those in power to manipulate the issues to those members of the society that have no availability to seek the "truth." My definition would be, "Something that we are informed in order to come to a positive consensus for an act of government or religion allowing the event to occur." I believe the war in Iraq, the initial invasion was such a lie. I believe wholeheartedly that the varying wars against the Native American tribes to be a "noble lie(s)" that still resonates to this very day. Religious groups use what could be considered noble lies in the promotion of their particular sect. Since religion is not on the same plane as faith religion must follow edicts of man and woman and not of God. The military and national security agencies use noble lies on an everyday basis to justify precepts about threats, real or imagined in order to attain a certain goal or desire and more importantly popular public opinion to continue or contrive certain acts against segments of the population or world consensus.
The need for lying in any form is not in all cases justified and in more instances than not perpetuate a challenge in communication with a person or group of people. The stranger part of this phrase "noble lie" is certainly the word noble which has several connotations in our personal lives or societies precepts as a whole. Perhaps the truth is stranger than fiction?
